Styx/Yes

7 p.m. Sunday, July 24. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 14141 Riverport Drive, Maryland Heights.

Styx/Yes

$16 to $159. 314-298-9944.

Styx vs. Yes: Both progressive rock bands excel at expanding pop songs with an operatic scope. While Yes penned dungeonmaster-approved musical quests through time, Styx was ballsy enough to perform its conceptual robot record Kilroy Was Here as a stage musical during its concerts. Winner: Styx. Both bands can wail, but Yes guitarist Steve Howe outshreds Styx's Tommy Shaw. Winner: Yes. Neither band's current lineup contains its original singer; the members of Styx stepped up to share lead vocal duties to replace Dennis DeYoung while Yes plucked Benoit David from a Yes tribute band after founding frontman Jon Anderson became too ill to tour. Winner: Benoit David. Styx wrote "Renegade"; Yes wrote "Roundabout." Winner: tie. Styx and Yes are co-headlining a date at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Winner: St. Louis.
