Since opening in 2008, The Gramophone has become one of the best places to experience a multitude of musical endeavors. It's the new home of ultra-hip dance party London Calling, and in the coming weeks will see the return of Chicago's mash-up virtuosos the Hood Internet, and swampy, post-Americana bluesman Brother Dege, along with a host of local shows and CD releases.
Tonight, however, the venue is debuting a new event: a collaborative open mic night called The Shed. Local jazz drummer, DJ and sound engineer Matt Keune, a.k.a. MCK, will host the weekly happening.
The idea came about during a conversation between Keune and Roo Yawitz, owner of the Gramophone. Yawitz said that both men see great talent in St. Louis, but feels that there's been a lack of cross-genre collaboration among artists in the area.
"We are trying to make it a place fun night for people to work together and we are hoping this will lead to some great improvised moments," said Yawitz. "Like some emcees rapping over a jazz trio, or a blues guitarist playing in of front a funk drummer and someone on the turntables. Basically like musical gumbo."
The Shed features a full backline of drums, turntables, bass and guitar amps to facilitate collaboration. The night will also feature record and gear swaps every week, DJ sets -- and you can get a three-song demo recorded for $5.
