When the Army War College writes its official history of the Campaign Against Counting Crows and their Inappropriate Appropriation of Non-Resident Place Names, Tapes 'n Tapes will have earned an entire chapter — nay, perhaps an entire volume — for themselves. Not only does the Minneapolis band's fantastic debut album, The Loon, strike preemptive blows against Adam Duritz having his heart broken in "Manitoba" or "In Houston," but these brawlers also dare to take back one of the enemy's greatest prizes, "Omaha." No condescending to "the heart of America" here, my friends: It's one of the year's loveliest songs, an ode to "hot eyes, hot ticks, hot mouths." What does it all mean? That you should be very afraid, Adam. Tapes 'n Tapes know where you live.
