Does the world really need another quasi-danceable, kinda-post-punk, sorta-gloomy band? Especially (at least in the aftermath of the Franz Ferdinand invasion) a nattily dressed one from Scotland? In the case of the Cinematics, the answer is a resounding yes. The quartet mines the moodier territory of spiky early-'80s countrymen such as Josef K or the Fire Engines (and the roaring atmospherics of Doves or Editors) on its debut, A Strange Education — even if its best song (the regal, Bunnymen-like Britpop chimer "Sunday Sun") is a Beck cover and the acoustic version of "Home" sounds jarringly like Jeff Buckley.
