As the sons of producer and pianist Jim Dickinson,
North Mississippi Allstars guitarist-vocalist Luther Dickinson and drummer Cody Dickinson have some serious roots in Southern blues and boogie: Their daddy gleaned knowledge from country bluesmen Furry Lewis, Bukka White, Sleepy John Estes and Mississippi Fred McDowell. But the elder Dickinson then took what he learned and turned it into rock & roll -- a family tradition the North Mississippi Allstars follow. The trio -- which is rounded out by bassist Chris Chew -- takes cues from musical mentors Otha Turner and the late RL Burnside to create a sound that appeals to both fresh-faced college kids following the jam-band circuit and grizzled blues aficionados. Though Luther's vocals have yet to fully mature, his guitar work and the band's instrumental wallop more than compensate.
