When looking back on the Pointer Sisters' career, it's easy to be blinded by the neon sheen of "I'm So Excited," the trio's biggest hit and lasting contribution to the '80s-pop canon. But look a little closer: Originally a quartet, the Pointers first scored with a cover of Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can." After slimming down to a trio, the group hit big in the '80s with a number of versatile singles. They turned up the seduction for the low-lit "Slow Hand," got flirty with "He's Shy" and tried to ignite a dance craze with "Automatic." The Sisters have kept busy since their heyday, with original members Ruth and Anita keeping the dream alive. (Ruth's daughter, Issa, fills the third slot.) The group's performance will be the centerpiece of this year's Boogie Ball, a benefit for the American Liver Foundation.
