The Ten Best Shows In St. Louis This Weekend: August 3 to 5

This week's post is, incidentally, super-streamlined and hyper-organized compared to most weeks. On the first page you'll find five shows for Friday, and the second lists five shows for Saturday. This wasn't intentional; you see, weekend post show-pickin' is a grueling, arduous process here at RFT Music HQ, wherein we convene in a room and immediately begin shouting at each other, throwing things and gesticulating wildly in defense of our chosen picks for the week. Friendships are shattered, dreams are crushed, and workplaces are disrupted. In the ensuing chaos, little to no thought is put into which of the three weekend days the shows technically fall upon -- our aim is, after all, to find the best shows of the entire weekend, not the best of each day. When the dust settled after this week's battle royale, it just so happened to settle in neat five-by-five piles.

Friday is the date of Off Broadway's big Ween tribute ("big ween," huh huh); tons of local talent will pay homage to the bygone band, including a Fattback reunion set. Go ahead and sleep in the parking lot that night (go ahead; it's fine), because on Saturday, Kishi Bashi will bring his violin-looping musical act to the same venue. Also on Saturday, St. Louis will be treated to a now-rare Sex Robots show at Mangia.

So, what to do on Sunday? We hear that the Psychic Paramount is worth your time (thanks anonymous commenter from another post!) -- they'll be playing Cicero's with the Conformists. The rest of our picks follow.

Janiva Magness @ Old Rock House 8:00 p.m. | $13-$15 Janiva Magness drew inspiration from unlikely sources -- including Matthew Sweet -- but her latest is as authentic as blues could be. (KM)

Taste the Waste: A Tribute to Ween @ Off Broadway w/ The Feed, Dock Ellis Band, Cree Rider Family Band, Picture Day, Fattback, Sean Canan, False Moves 8:00 p.m. | $10-$13 The whole thing will be great, but let's not kid ourselves: The reunion of Fattback is what makes this truly can't-miss. (KM)

First Friday Arts Affair @ 2720 Cherokee w/ Psychedelic Psychonauts, The Ascetic Junkies, Justin Torres Loop Project 6:00 p.m. | $5 The First Friday Arts Affair is a monthly artistic celebration that takes place every first Friday of the month at 2720 Cherokee. "Multicultural food, songs and dances, live painters, drawings, poetry, live music, fire performers, clothing designers, and assorted other mayhem" are all on deck, according to the venue. (DH)

SHEL @ Wildey Theatre 8:00 p.m. | $20-$25 Ft. Collins' SHEL is sisters Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza, all four of whom are classically trained in music. Their folksy pop tunes are quirky-but-sophisticated and their musical chops are undeniable. (DH)

Googolplexia @ Schlafly Tap Room w/ Triceratops 9:00 p.m. | Free Those eagerly awaiting Googolplexia's upcoming split with Butt will assuredly wait with bated breath to hear the band's song from the split, entitled "Butt Release." Sadly, Butt will not be on hand to play its song, "Ass Disaster," so you'll just have to buy the record to hear it. These are all real things! (DH)
