Tig Notaro, who will be performing at the Firebird on September 3rd, is about to release the first ever comedy album on Secretly Canadian, the Indiana label that is home to Yeasayer, Jens Lekman, jj and more. Our news blog, Daily RFT, has an interview with the comedian. In her conversation with Nicholas Phillips, she touches on why she wound up on the label and what it's like performing at big music festivals.
Nicholas Phillips: Big music festivals (like Bonaroo) are starting to include more standup. Those events have a certain free-wheeling, open feel to them, very different from the controlled environment of a comedy club. Your act is wonderfully subtle; how does it feel playing those big, wild music festivals?
Tig Notaro: I have been lucky for the most part. A few times I was really concerned how it would go, but it always ends up being a great time. Maybe I thought I liked state fairs because of how many outdoor music festivals I do. Who knows.
You're the first comedian to sign with Secretly Canadian. You've said before that there is a lot of overlap between comedy fans and music fans, but have you gotten the impression you're turning any indie rock nerds onto comedy for the first time?
I'm certain I have. On this tour in particular, a guy came up to me after the show and told me he typically doesn't get into stand-up, but he bought my CD solely based on being affiliated with Secretly Canadian and that he loved it. And came to the show. That felt pretty good.
