Tobacco is Thomas Fec, a.k.a. Maniac Meat, Black Moth Super Rainbow maniac in chief. He's an unapologetically obscurantist electronic artist who consorts with the likes of Aesop Rock and Beck Hansen, and his music has been known to send the editors of Pitchfork into paroxysms of hipster glee. On last year's full-length Maniac Meat, Fec somehow makes an avalanche of squawk, fuzz and muddy thump sound paranoid, funny and groovy all at once, as if MF Doom were remixing There's a Riot Goin' On while banging on a fucked-up TV. Tobacco's futurism is historicism, a brainy-but-stoned inter-looping of dense analog synths, choppy metal guitar licks and warped robotic rhymes. His Off Broadway debut should be one of the heaviest and weirdest shows of the year.
