Nashville may not be the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of experimental metal, but don't tell that to Today Is The Day's Steve Austin. Since the early '90s, Austin and a rotating crew of background musicians including, at one point, Mastodon's Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor have been making records that concurrently straddle metal, noise and art-rock. After stints on a handful of indie-metal labels, Austin started SuperNova Records in 2006 and this year released Today is the Day's latest, Axis of Eden. Almost two decades into the game, Austin still hasn't lost his original aggressiveness, and this incarnation of his band pushes with a ferocious violence not found in today's weaker commercial metal.
