People have lumped Denton, Texas' FUR (a.k.a. Bryce Isbell and Gray Saint Germain Gideon) into the glo-fi/chillwave genre. Such a comparison is unfair: The duo doesn't specialize in trend-hopping electro, but it does co-opt elements of more mainstream genres -- sustained echoes, muffled disco, crisp beats-- to crafting dark, moving synthpop tinged with hip-hop. Fans of Pantha Du Prince, the German label Kompakt and old Massive Attack and Tricky albums will find much to love.
The band's new album, Witches, is out now. Download FUR's free Controlled Reverberations (Phuturelabs Mix) . FUR and local Phaseone and 18andCounting (a.k.a. Stan Chisholm) will be at 2720 Cherokee tonight for just $4. Event info here.
