Even by LA standards, Zolar-X must have been a bizarre sight. The official story is that they beamed down to Southern California from the planet Plutonia sometime around 1972. They spoke their own language, went by space names like Zory Zenith and Ygarr Ygarrist, wore spacesuits all the time (not just onstage) and performed prog-tinged space-glam anthems like "I Pulled My Helmet Off (I'm Going to Love Her)." Zolar-X ruled the LA scene in the pre-punk years but didn't hang up their space boots until 1981. Two years ago, Alternative Tentacles released Timeless, a collection of various sessions from throughout Z-X's career. In celebration, the Plutonians have reconvened and are touring — although, sadly, without lead singer Zory Zenith, who currently resides in an all-too-earthbound Oregon prison.
