theSTART at the Creepy Crawl, July 30: Bonus Interview footage

Posted By on Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:00 AM

In this week's paper, we ran a short interview with Aimee Echo of Cali electro-punks theSTART. One of most criminally underrated bands around today, theSTART plays the Creepy Crawl on Monday night, July 30. (Also, mea culpa: theSTART's album Initiation came out in 2004, not 2005 as I said in print. Oops.)

Besides theSTART though, Echo recently sang onstage with Teddybears, the Swedish electro-pop group. She filled the big shoes of Iggy Pop on the single "Punkrocker" on some recent live dates (including Coachella and San Francisco Britpop night Popscene). Video below, right after some extra Echo quotes about her work with Teddybears.

Did playing live with Teddybears influence the songs on Ciao, Baby? [Going out with them was] so much fun. Working with them is one of the most amazing things. By luck or by hard work or whatever it is, they’re really incredible musicians. There were no rehearsals for Teddybears. When I came into the pcture, we didn’t rehearse. Everybody showed up in San Francisco for our first show, we did an extended soundcheck, I got to run through the two songs I sing twice each, and then I did my first show.

Isn’t that nerve-wracking? It's kind of thrilling at the same time. When you over-rehearse sometimes, it takes the life out of the songs a bit. You can over-rehearse. You really, really can. Riding on some of the fear factor…maybe [added] some tension to the performance, which made it really fun. [laughs]
