The Grand Center continues its efforts to become an arts community hangout with the Thursdays @ the Intersection series, which launched its second season last night.KDHX and Grand Center have joined forces on the series. This year's installment offers a ten-week stretch of live music that pairs local artists with movies that match their aesthetic or interests. Last night, for example, paired Funky Butt Brass Band with The Music Man for this year's kick-off.

"We started this because the district is kind of quiet during the summer, and we wanted to enhance it," says Travis Howser, Grand Center's director of events and theater operations."We wanted to activate the park."

The best part: Every night is free, which means the band, the movie and the popcorn you gorge on during it are all gratis. Organizers provide about 40 seats, which can be moved wherever those who sit in them are most comfortable, but typical attendance generally reaches the 100-person mark. Those who don't dibs the seats are encouraged to bring their own.

This year marks the first in a new relationship for the series -- the partnership between Grand Center and KDHX. The radio station takes care of the programming for the series, working with artists to make sure movies such as E.T. and Austin Powers are really the best way to indicate their style. (Answer: They are.)

"We're looking for bands that are pretty accessible to a lot of people, and we want to make sure that the entire ten weeks is pretty diverse," Howser says. "We don't want to have just a ten-week blues festival. We want different people to come down for new bands."

Below is the schedule for the next five weeks of Thursdays @ the Intersection:

June 30: Ryan Spearman/ A Mighty Wind July 7: The Brothers Lazaroff/ The Last Waltz July 14: Magnolia Summer/ E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial July 21: Bob Reuter's Alley Ghost/ The Outsiders July 28: The Rhythm Section Road Show/ Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
