Lucky Old Sons at Three Kings, 7/28/11

The second of a pair of informal, free sets by laughing sock-hoppers Lucky Old Sons saw the quartet perform for an audience of exactly three (minus employees). Certainly not the bands' fault -- these sorts of sets reflect the whims of a venue's general audience, or the weather, or happenstance, or assorted whatever. And the gents took it in stride, playing a covers-heavy set with good humor and earnest commitment. A few highlights from the late set: A toe-tapping rendition of "Rock Around the Clock" and a piano-only closer from electric mandolinist Steve Bauer.

Three Kings, newly renovated and reopened in the Loop, has done an admirable job attracting local bands: Recent sets from Dive Poets, Beth Bombara and other stalwarts prove the place is eager to branch beyond whatever burnout with a guitar is wandering up the street this week.

Lucky Old Sons' most recent release is Friendly Valley -- an accurate title, given the stripped-down doo-wop, rockabilly, surft and generally amicable '50s influence of its contents. Last night the band prepared a set list that spanned 40 songs -- the occasion wound up requiring a little more than half that total.
