Critic's Notebook

Overheard: "This is the exact opposite of the last time that I saw him," perhaps in reference to one of Adams' previous two shows with the Cardinals at the Pageant in 2007 or at the Fox in 2008, where he alternately displayed apathy and antagonism toward his audience.

Personal Bias: I have loved as many Ryan Adams albums as I have disliked, and of the performances that I have seen from him the number of good equals the number of bad. For me, the show did the best thing possible, which was to constantly remind me how I came to love Adams' music: Long sunny drives on the east end of Long Island with Heartbreaker spinning. But more than being nostalgic, Adams' performance also convinced me that he is still capable of masterfully expressing emotion, and that his work is still very much worthy of attention.
