The Ten Best Shows in St. Louis This Weekend: October 4 to 6

This weekend, two festivals hit the streets: Grove Fest and the Great Totem Festival. Besides those, catch legendary acts including the Last Poets and Geto Boys. All kinds of recommendations await, right after the jump!

Friday (October 4):

Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin @ The Sheldon 8 p.m. | $40-$50 Five-time Grammy winner Mary Chapin Carpenter knows a thing or two about playing country/folk tunes. After all, she's been doing it for over 25 years. (DH)

Thollem McDonas @ Webster University-Moore Auditorium 7:30 p.m. | free Keyboard improviser Thollem McDonas, who has collaborated with hundreds of musicians including William Parker and Mike Watt, performs live to Martha Coburn's Super 8 stop-motion films including Triumph of the Wild. (MS)

Wretched Worst w/ Wild Hex, Gutterpriest @ Apop Records 9 p.m. | $5 Lexington's Wretched Worst brings its sludgy hardcore metal to Cherokee Street. Listen here. Wild Hex, a new St. Louis band, opens along with Gutterpriest featuring a member of Execution Techniques. (MS)

The Full Hookup One Year Anniversary w/ DJ Who @ HandleBar 10 p.m. The Full Hookup turns one year old, keeping the feet moving and the faces smiling at the HandleBar, which we recently dubbed St. Louis' best dance club. (DH)

Grove Fest w/ Hope and Therapy, Stickley & Canan, Fresh Heir, Vibesteady, DJ Sinamin, Hazard to Ya Booty, DJ Disco Dick, DJ Irene, Old Salt Union, Dave Simon's Rock School All Stars, T/Lec, Perkinoff Brothers, Trance Dance, Mathias and the Pirates, The Blind Eyes, Tef Poe @ The Grove 2 p.m. | free Catch sixteen acts across two stages at the eighth annual Grove Fest - full schedule here. Pet Rock: the Musical w/ Animal Teeth, Beauty Pageant, Willis @ Livery Company 9 p.m. | free Pet Rock: the Musical returns from a hiatus with its special brand of "human techno psychedelic rock explosion of space funk." The openers, Livery frequenters, keep things raw'n'real. This one's all over the board. Leave your inhibitions and expectations at the door. (MS)
