Of all the insurgents to emerge from the alt-country scare of the mid-'90s, Robbie Fulks was the most versatile and, in certain moments, the most irreverent. A songwriting, singing and guitar-playing triple threat, Fulks penned definitive takedowns of Music City ("Fuck This Town"), rockist snobbery ("Every Kind of Music But Country"), and glitterati bathos ("She Took A Lot of Pills and Died") — and that was just on his first album. At his best, Fulks is a chronicler of American (often but not always Southern) lives and loves that play out hard and bittersweet on the margins. It's not surprising that the prettiest song on his latest album Upland Stories is the tale of a fiercely honest and unrepentant musician rake. He never misses the mark, even when the target might be himself.

Solo Shot: A deadly witty songwriter (and connoisseur of between-song banter) in his own right, Brian Henneman of the Bottle Rockets opens the night.
