The south city dining scene has a certain charm — one of corner pubs filled with neighbors and friends watching Cardinals games, eating bar food and drinking a few. A recently opened spot in Cardondelet, Bently’s Pub & Grub (7529 Michigan Avenue) fits that bill nicely. The restaurant, which replaced Lucky’s Restaurant and Lounge, serves traditional casual American fare with a British twist here and there.

The interior is typical for the area: wood floors, tiled ceilings and TVs on every wall for optimum viewing pleasure. Amenities include two pool tables, two dart boards, a jukebox and a Pac-Man machine located on the second floor of the establishment. If the weather is right, the patio is the real winner here. At what feels like double the size of the downstairs interior, it’s a great space to hang out with a larger group of friends.

This is a neighborhood haunt, so expect the crowd to be full of friendly locals looking for a way to get out of the house and catch the game or some live music. Local bands play at 7 p.m. twice a month, but if you can’t wait, feel free to crank up the jukebox with whatever Taylor Swift song you’re obsessed with right now.

First glance at the beer list impresses, with a long and thorough list of domestic pilsners, international brews like Tecate and Tsingtao, and local brews from the likes of 4 Hands and Urban Chestnut. The bar is fully stocked with all your favorite liquors too, of course.

As the restaurant just opened its doors a month ago, its kitchen is still finding its footing. The menu is surprisingly extensive, with appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizza, dinner plates and dessert. Appetizers are your standard bar staples of loaded fries, fried pickles, nachos and so on, but they may be your best option. (Large plates including British favorites like Shepherd's Pie, Fish and Chips, and Scotch Eggs can be inconsistent.)

The lengthy sandwich menu offers seventeen different options, with their self-proclaimed signature options being the French dip and Karen’s Famous Philly Cheesesteak. Bently’s is also family-friendly (until the sun goes down, at least), and even offers a children’s menu of kid favorites. Night owls will appreciate a smaller bar menu that serves a variety of fried delicacies from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Not surprisingly, weekends are livelier than weeknights, with house specialty Bloody Mary’s available to start the day off right.

With a revamped bar and a patio that most restaurants would kill for, Bently’s Pub & Grub is in a good position to become a neighborhood staple with a friendly atmosphere. As the kitchen matures, they’re sure to become a popular spot in the Carondelet neighborhood.

Owner Kelly Barlows tells RFT they “hope Bently’s becomes a neighborhood gathering place.” It's already easy to see that happening.
