Psychedelic Furs fans were delighted this morning to learn that the revered British new wave act has a new album in the works, its first in 29 years.

Made of Rain will be released by the UK-based independent label Cooking Vinyl, who has worked with everyone from Billy Bragg to the Lemonheads to TLC to Babymetal. Psychedelic Furs' previous album, World Outside, came out way back in 1991, preceding a hiatus and eventual reformation in the 2000s.

But the new album comes with an extra reason for St. Louis-area fans to celebrate: The entire album was recorded right here in our hometown by Jason McEntire at Sawhorse studios, with Guns N' Roses/Pale Divine guitarist (and fellow STLien) Richard Fortus producing.

"I’m very excited to announce a new album coming out by the Psychedelic Furs!," McEntire wrote on Facebook this morning. "Recorded by yours truly, mixed by Tim Palmer and produced by Richard Fortus! It’s excellent!"

The Fortus connection is no surprise — he and Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler have collaborated extensively in the past — but it does seem curious that the whole band would travel across the pond to him, rather than the other way around.

Credit that to Fortus' wife, Stephanie. Also on Facebook, she writes:

Richard and I were married in December, 2016. He left out on tour in January and was gone most of the year. When he came home in December, 2017, he was so honored and excited to have been asked by the brilliant singer/songwriter Richard Butler to produce the next Psychedelic Furs album. The first one in almost thirty years.

I was happy for Richard but heartbroken because it would mean more time away. I asked him if he thought the band would consider recording the album in St. Louis. Never in a million years did I think they would agree. A few months later the band came in from all over the country and recorded what is simply one of the best albums in years, produced by the great Richard Fortus and background vocals by Paisley & Clover.

I'm so thrilled to announce the new Psychedelic Furs album "Made of Rain" and the first single from the album "Don't Believe".
The full album will be released on May 1. Meanwhile, you can stream the new single, "Don't Believe," below:
