A University City man returned to his girlfriend's apartment after a fight to shoot and kill her and the groundskeeper who'd intervened earlier to stop the attack, according to police.

Adrian Houston, 37, of the 7700 block of Delmar Boulevard was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, first degree burglary and second degree domestic assault.

When Houston saw girlfriend Jessica Thompson, 25, was in her apartment in the 5800 block of Cabanne Avenue with a male friend on July 9, he banged on doors and windows and entered without her permission, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He then choked Thompson in front of her friend.

Tony Jordan, the 32-year-old groundskeeper for the apartment building, heard Thompson's screams and tried to stop the assault, according to the P-D. Houston left only to return around 1:30 a.m. with a handgun.

Houston shot Jordan in the face, head and neck before returning to Thompson's apartment and shooting her in the face, according to police. Both Jordan and Thompson were pronounced dead on the scene by first responders.

Police said Houston fled in a dark-colored sedan. He is being held in jail without bail.
