An East St. Louis cop pleaded guilty yesterday to punching a handcuffed suspect in the face in 2006.

McWherter could get a year in prison and a $100,000 fine when he's sentenced in June. Under terms of the plea agreement, McWherter agreed to resign from the force and not seek another job in law enforcement or the military.

McWherter arrested Donald Curry in January 2006 for not paying his fare on MetroLink. In a civil suit filed against McWherter, Curry claims that the officer took him to a jail cell not under video surveillance and proceeded to "savagely beat" him to the point that some of his teeth were knocked out.
