Bernie Sanders to Open Campaign Office on Cherokee Street

St. Louis is feeling the Bern!

Fresh off Sanders' victory in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary on Tuesday, his campaign has inked a lease for office space on south St. Louis' Cherokee Street — 2626 Cherokee, a storefront that previously held the Failed Society clothing store.

The move-in will be happening quickly — the 900-square-foot site is already listed as the canvassing headquarters for a event this Sunday.

It's hard to imagine a more fitting combination of politician and constituency than Sanders and the Cherokee district, a once downtrodden part of south St. Louis that's increasingly home to great music venues, intriguing startups and young progressives operating outside the city's traditional power structure. (Alderwoman Cara Spencer, who is based out of the Nebula coworking space on Cherokee, was the only candidate to beat an incumbent last election cycle.) In December, Cherokee even played host to "Bernieman," a fundraiser/rally hosted by the neighborhood's creatives in Sanders' honor.

But if Sanders is winning over the city's young and hip, his opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has locked up the politicians: The Post-Dispatch reported back in November that "almost every big-name Democrat in Missouri" had already endorsed her.
