Byrd Style Lounge Relaunch Tonight

Byrd Style Lounge Relaunch Tonight
Mr. Dior himself will not be there, but his work will.
Sometimes, only a $3,000 vintage Christian Dior frock will do. Other times, plunking down a couple sawbucks on a sundress from the '60s will scratch your sartorial itch just fine. And after tonight's super-swank relaunch party at Byrd Style Lounge in Clayton, the Lou's most stylish will have a place to find both -- and plenty in between.

Julie Stotlar has owned Byrd Style Lounge for three years, and it's hewed closely to the sun-drenched spendy-casual L.A. and Miami aesthetic of high-end knitwear like Splendid and J-Brand. But starting tonight the shop is revamping completely, with a party dubbed "Flipping the Byrd," focusing on high-end couture that Stotlar resells for her clients and accessible vintage through a collaboration with Miss Ohio Vintage.

"It's a little bit of Cherokee Street meets Clayton," Stotlar says. Her clients tend to be society types who have pieces with their thousand-dollar-plus price tags still attached taking up valuable closet real estate. The Miss Ohio Vintage shopper, she says, has more of a hipster sensibility.

"It's kind of green in a way," Stotlar says. "They get to purge themselves, and people who can't attain the items [otherwise] can have them. Hopefully it's stimulating the St. Louis economy."

The store's new concept, she says, will be a bit like a museum or costume repository. People can go see stunning, museum-quality fashion. And, if they're so inclined, they can add it to their personal collection.

Stotlar boasts a French hand-sewn Christian Dior piece that was worn to President Obama's inauguration, for example. There's mouth-watering McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Missoni, Prada and more.

"It's not a resale store and it's not a vintage store," she says. "I like to say we redistribute couture. It's a venue to come appreciate fashion, to look at great pieces you won't find anywhere else."

Tonight, rub exquisite elbows with fashionable sorts starting at 6 p.m. at the store at 8117 Maryland Avenue in Clayton. The party is free, with snacks and drinks and tunes flowing 'til 9 p.m. And a pretty major runway show kicks off at 7:45 -- a couple dozen glamazons will strut the catwalk in breathtaking looks.
