The mother of former St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson has entered a guilty plea.
Carol Dotson, 70, was accused by federal prosecutors of embezzling more than $2 million from the Olivette commercial real estate property management company where she worked. Today she pled guilty to a single count of wire fraud — a charge that could net her up to twenty years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors allege that Carol Dotson, the company's office administrator, "wrote multiple checks to herself, withdrew large sums of cash to spend on elder care for her mother, mortgage payments, home renovations, home cleaning services, law services and shopping at local stores."
Last summer, her son learned about the indictment from Fox-2 reporter Chris Hayes. He told Hayes he was shocked and that he and his mother had been estranged for years.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Olivette Police Department. Carol Dotson will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber.
