April 21 marked the anniversary of the founding of Rome. In Columbia, it is Toga Day. To celebrate, the Columbia Tribune reports, 114 students at the Columbia Independent School paraded through town on Wednesday afternoon dressed in togas.
The students ate lunch at a local pub. (Sadly, it appears they had to eat sitting up rather than reclining Roman-style.) Then they headed over to a nearby auditorium to perform Latin-themed skits for parents and friends.
As far as nerdy celebrations go, this one was particularly excellent, even better than Chicago's annual Talk Like Shakespeare Day. Dead languages always win out -- though if somebody ever instituted Talk Like Chaucer Day, the not-quite-dead-yet language would have to win out.
