Credit Where Credit is Due: Cards Put Ank' on DL

A couple of days ago, I wrote about Dick Ankiel's injury. I concluded that I thought the Cardinals needed to put him on the disabled list, rather than go day-to-day with him. My reasoning was that the Cards are already playing with a short bench, due to the bizarre obsession of Tony La Russa with having as many middle relievers as possible, and under no circumstances did I want Ankiel feeling pressure to try and rush back before he was ready.

Well, I take a lot of shots at this team, and some of the more incomprehensible moves that they make, and I figure that if I'm going to criticize, I had better give credit where it's deserved as well.

The Cardinals put Swingin' Dick on the DL today, citing a shoulder contusion as the reason. Of course, we all know that the shoulder is just part of the problem; the real issue is that he nearly killed himself running into a wall. Dude's going to be sore for a while. What I found most encouraging about the whole situation was the reasoning behind the move:

"I just think that by the time he's going to feel well enough to practice and get himself back in shape, days will have passed," manager Tony La Russa said. "And there's a threat that he would be impatient or we would be impatient to pinch-hit him or something like that, which would be unfair. We're playing short anyway."

Wait. Is that...logic? Not something I'm real familiar with, to be quite honest, following this team, but I have to say, I like it an awful lot.

So the right move was made, and for the right reasons, as well. I don't have anything to complain about. Huh. Not sure I like this.
