Berger's on the P-D beat.
Berger's on the P-D beat.
Jerry Berger is out with a mini-profile of the one-and-only Emily Pulitzer, former owner of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and, by extension, his former boss.

The ol' gossip actually gets Mrs. Pulitzer to respond to the oft-muttered criticism that she screwed the pooch by selling the paper to Iowa-based Lee Enterprises in 2005! Read on...

"The mention that a former P-D editor blamed Emily for the current situation of the Post by selling it got a quick response," writes Berger. "She said, 'How simplistic. My vote was one of three. We saw the handwriting on the wall.'"

And by that, she appears to be a referring to an earlier statement to Berger, ie., "Nobody has figured out how to deal with the Internet."

Say what you will about the current state of the local daily, those three votes to sell added up to some serious business acumen (not to mention $1.46 billion) on Mrs. Pulitzer's part.
