Authorities in Kansas City now believe that a five-year-old girl intentionally drowned an 18-month-old boy last week in an effort to stop him from crying.

The victim, Jermane Johnson of St. Louis, had been staying with relatives in Kansas City for several weeks. Last Friday, Jermane and at least one other child were left in the care of a teenage girl when an adult went to pick up a relative from a bus stop.

During that time police say a five-year-old girl also staying at the house took Jermane to the bathroom where water from a previous bath had not been drained from the tub. She then put Jermane under the water, drowning Jermane because he "made too much noise" and "cried too much."

Authorities don't plan to issue charges against the girl. Behavior specialists say that five-year-olds can't comprehend life and death, and that the girl didn't know what she was doing.

In the meantime, the toddler's father, Jermane Johnson Jr., is left preparing for his son's funeral. On Facebook on Monday he posed the question: "I just got ask the hardest question that no parent should never answer What kind of caskets do I want to put my son in."

Anyone who wishes to make a donation to cover the cost of Jermane's funeral can do so at any Neighbors Credit Union c/o the Jermane L Johnson Jr Memorial Account.

Correction: This story originally reported that Jermane Johnson Sr. was the relative being picked up from the bus stop when Jermane Johnson Jr. died. That was not the case. We apologize for the error.
