Cristina Torre, daughter of former Cardinals manager Joe Torre, was apparently on a Brooklyn, New York, street yesterday when she noticed something troubling: A one-year-old baby was hanging from a fire escape two stories above her.
Then the baby fell -- right into Torre's arms.
"I was getting calls about congratulations on my daughter being a hero. I had no idea what they were talking about," Joe Torre said in an interview. "Somebody was talking about a child...hanging from a fire escape, and she got off and went over there and sure enough there was a baby and, you know, she caught the baby."
What a catch!
Here's some footage from the scene via ABC News:
"I am very proud of my daughter Cristina's actions today during an incident in Brooklyn involving a small child," Torre, now the executive vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball, said in an official statement. "Fortunately for that child, she was in the right place at the right time to lend a hand."
Cristina Torre told the New York Daily News that she never took her eye off of the baby.
"He was dangling. I knew he would be flipping very soon," she said. "He literally landed in my arms. It was a relief. I'm just glad he was safe."
