Former Kinloch Mayor Darren Small Sentenced to Prison

Former Kinloch mayor Darren Small and his wife Jayna Small have pleaded guilty to charges related to the theft of funds.

A federal judge has sentenced former Kinloch mayor and fire chief Darren Small to eight months in prison. He pleaded guilty in August to two counts of fraud.

His wife and co-defendant, Jayna Small, was sentenced to five years probation.

The beleaguered city's former first couple were caught using the Kinloch Fire Protection District's money to buy themselves clothing, food, liquor and cigarettes. They also paid their home utility bills out of the district's accounts, authorities say.

Jayna Small was the president of the fire district's board of directors. Darren Small took over the chief's job after his predecessor, Darran Kelley, was busted for embezzling $140,000.

A previous mayor, Keith Conway, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison after he was caught swindling taxpayers to cover vacations in the Bahamas and Las Vegas.
