Saturday Less than a month removed from electing the nation's first black president, St. Louisans are remembering a local Civil Rights leader -- Julius Rosenwald. He contributed greatly the St. Louis and national black community, from financing the first black YMCA here to helping building more than 5,000 schools for blacks throughout the south. From 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Vaughn Cultural Center (3701 Grandel Square), the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. will honor Rosenwald and discuss the book about him, "The North Star: Julius Rosenwald's Impact Upon Black America."
Friday and Saturday In his own special way, comedian Norm MacDonald has gotten you to laugh at least once. Either through one of his impressions on Saturday Night Live (Burt Reynolds, Bob Dole, David Letterman, Larry King, the list goes on) or as himself on the show's "Weekend Update;" so now is your chance to see the comic in the flesh at the Funnybone Comedy Club (614 Westport Plaza) at one of five shows Friday at Saturday night. Showtimes are 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30, 10 and 11:55 p.m. Saturday. Something tells me the midnight show Saturday could be the best. Tickets are $30 for VIP and $25 for general admission, though as of Thursday night, VIP tickets for the 10 p.m. Saturday are sold out. For more information, call the club at 314-469-6692.
Saturday During tough economic times, sometimes the necessities in life are neglected, like say, health care. If that's the case, you can rest assured that the Saint Louis Science Center's sixth-annual HealthFest is still free. It runs from 9:30 am. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and features health-related exhibits by the American Red Cross, St. Louis Society for the Blind, St. Louis Children's Hospital, Lead Safe St. Louis, Mid America Transplant Services and many others. And, if you haven't been to the doc in a while and occasionally wonder about your health, there will be various health screenings for all ages. For more information, call 314-289-4400.
Saturday Starting at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Saint Louis Zoo, a disco-themed event called "Zootini" gets underway with live music and zootini-themed cocktails. "The dress code is upscale and hip, though patrons are encouraged to add some '70s kitsch to their outfits," writes Christian Schaeffer. All Weekend Starting tonight at the Center of Creative Arts, "Same Spirit, Different Movement" debuts and runs through Sunday. It's a "hip-hop revue with killer dancing," claims The New York Times. Put on by the Philadelphia-based Illstyle & Peace Productions, the revue "brings traditional forms of movement into the 21st century with a fusion of acrobatics and raw urban flavor." The showtimes are: 7 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $14 to $18. Friday If the walls in your home are naked, spruce them up with art. One place to buy original works locally? Head over to "Art Fix," the silent art auction and party from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South Twelfth Street). It's a benefit for Rebuilding Together-St. Louis, which "brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners." There will be restaurant samplings and unlimited beverages. Thirty original works will be on the auction block. Still need another reason to attend? Well, the RFT is a sponsor, so there you go. Friday If you're feeling giving, head over to a worthwhile cause at the Moulin ( 2017 Choteau Avenue) near Lafayette Square for the "Caring for Kids and A Night at the Moulin Rouge." The cost is $45 at the door and while "scrumptious treats" from nearby Vin De Set will be served along with a wine tasting. And there's more! After the 6 p.m. event is through, guests are invited to party on the Vin De Set rooftop -- overlooking downtown to the north, until midnight. Saturday St. Louis mega-glossy fashion mag Alive is hosting the "Ultimate Alive Makeover" winner at Saturday night at Lush Nightclub (3037 Olive Boulevard) in Midtown. For the past seven months, one person has undergone a makeover of indeterminable proportions and the person's new 'do -- and new everything else, possibly -- will be revealed. Also at the party, one person will be awarded a $1,000 makeover package. The party starts at 9 p.m. at Lush, but to be involved in the makeover contest, one must RSVP to [email protected].
