Friday, August 8 1. Bicycles + Meteor Shower = Loveliest of Friday Nights. Pink-cheeked, hair-askewed hauties will be returning from the Forest Park five-mile Planetary Pedal to star-gaze at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium on Friday. If you can't make the ride, you can still enjoy the free telescope viewing of the Perseid Meteor shower. Registration for the ride is in front of the Planetarium from 6 to 7 p.m. Riding will commence at 7 p.m. Call 314-416- 9930 ext. 104, for details. Weather permitting, the viewing lasts from dusk until 10 p.m. in the archery field adjacent to the Planetarium.
Saturday, August 9 2. Speaking of a Starry-Eyed Surprise, when was the last time anyone danced to that catchy single? I can't remember either. It's a shame. But. DJ Joey Modus will be spinning that and other glow-stick friendly music at Dante's Nightclub Saturday night. Listen to some of his re-mixes on the Space and you may find yourself dancing all night to this DJ at your desk.
Saturday, August 9 3. Perhaps art will help one shake off the week instead. Marble Yoga Studio, 1905 Park Avenue, may help. On Saturday, Threads: A Group Fiber Show opens. Enjoy light nummies and live music from 6 to 9 p.m., when the studio presents a trio of stitched-paper and fiber artists: Ken Howard, Lois Lutes and Susan Oviatt. You'll see pieces that progress down-on-the-farm craft methods to meticulous trend-setting work. Exhibit runs through September 7.
Friday, August 8 4. The Tudor Street Festival offers attendees the chance to listen to live music, sip drinks and taste food from F15teen and Onesto. Get out those business cards and network or just gripe about the new iPhone, all while at the renovated Tudor Building between 19th and 20th streets on Washington Avenue. RSVP to [email protected].
Saturday, August 9 5. If partying for non-profits is your thing, you and your well-behaved (leashed) canine are invited to the Stray Rescue of St. Louis Barkaritaville event on Saturday, August 8 at 3rd Degree Glass Factory. From 7 to 11 p.m., the event includes a catered dinner, dessert and coffee by Russo's Gourmet Catering. Beer, wine, margarita's, soda and water and live music by Gumbohead. Tickets are $65.
Saturday, August 9 6. Perhaps you love animals, but aren't able to shell out too much money. Well you could stop by Lucas School House from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday night for The Animal House Fund Toga Party. Twenty dollars helps the pups and kits and includes a Pearl Vodka cocktail. Co-organized by Animal House and Metropolis, you can get the details on the group's MySpace.
Saturday, August 9 7. If a toga party doesn't tickle your fancy, but you're still feeling non-for-profity, try grape stomping at Stone Hill Winery. The stompin' starts at 1 p.m. Saturday. Money raised will go to the Sheltered Workshop for the mentally and physically challenged. Groups will be stomping to music and judged on dance moves and by amount of juice produced -- the winner from each group will compete in the Grand Style Stomp-Off for the dubious title of Grand Champion Style Stomper. Registration and lunch (served on first come, first serve basis) begins at 11 a.m. Grounds fee is $3; registration fee is $5. Winning a dance/grape-stomping contest: Pretty much priceless. Saturday, August 9 8. Watching a step show is almost as fun as participating; check out the Blanch M. Touhill Theatre on Saturday night where the Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will be hosting the 27th Annual Midwest Charity Marchdown Step Show. Proceeds from the Step Show, held since 1981, will be divided between the two winning teams, one fraternity and one sorority. They will receive prize money to donate to the charity of their choice. The remaining proceeds will be used to create merit-based scholarships for two high school students in the St. Louis area. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m. General admission is $18.
Saturday, August 9 9. Calling all entomology enthusiasts! Babler State Park is hosting Bug Day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., where you'll get an up-close look at multi-legged creatures and an overview of the park. You'll be able to discuss park projects and upcoming plans with Babler representatives. So, your vision of the perfect park could very well become reality. Bee and butterfly exhibits will be on display from The Butterfly House and Montauk State Park. Other activities include a decomposers hike and what else, but a buggy Olympics.
