Not totally satisfied with your weekend itinerary? Never fear, Go! is here! This regular feature highlights everything from rock shows to art openings, from delicious dishes to hidden-gem hangouts. Here's the weekend concert calendar compiled in A to Z
Friday, 5/9
Clothing Time: High fashion is as fickle as most world-hating teens -- its moods and styles are mercurial in form, switching fabrics, cuts and even era-inspired styles several times a year. This is why your inner fashionista simply must sashay to the third annual Pronto Fashion Show and Design Contest and learn about what’s hot at this very moment. The doors at 555 Washington Avenue open at 7:30 p.m. with a runway show at 8:30 displaying the latest work from up-and-coming designers. The competition portion is to be judged by industry experts and fashion retailers. Before the show, enjoy a complimentary wine bar and appetizers from Hendris. Tickets ($40, $125 for VIP seating) can be picked up at HT Communications Group (141 N. Meramec Avenue; 314-726-3117).
Grape Taste: Laumeier Sculpture Park’s (12580 Rott Road, Sunset Hills; 314-821-1209) Art Fair will bring out the best in every art and wine enthusiast, including the ever-indulgent Ms. Day. She wants you to join in the fun. Get the details about tonight’s wine tasting along with info about the weekend festival by clicking here.
Do Flatter Yourself: No need to check your ego at the door. If you did, it’d totally defeat the purpose of Lush Nightclub’s (3037 Olive Street; 314-533-2700) lavish soirée going by the same name -- EGO. At 10 p.m., you’ll pay nothing to enter vanity’s ground zero, just as long as that see-and-be-seen attire is in check. DJ Imperial will provide the evening’s soundtrack for all the inflating, boosting and feeding likely to benefit any ego. To reserve bottle service, call 636-346-8168.
Saturday, 5/10
Sweetest Escape: Slip into something absolutely angelical to make an appearance at Sugar Lounge’s (1405 Washington Avenue) grand opening. Those whiteout-colored wares will blend right in with the all-white décor and almost become a part of the new bar’s elegant ambiance. Get VIP admission from 10 p.m. to midnight by e-mailing [email protected] and put a bottle of your favorite liquor on hold by calling 314-621-9946.
Urbane in the Membrane: The Rialot Ballroom at the Centene Center for Arts and Education (3547 Olive Street; 314-963-3477) will make an exquisite backdrop for Urbanaire, a fundraiser benefiting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) advocate group Promo. A special VIP reception will kick things off at 7:30 p.m. (VIP tickets $150), and doors for general admission ticket-holders ($50, $30 for students) open at 8:30. Upon entrance, appetizers from Revival, El Scorcho, Boogaloo and Fu ManChu will greet you, as will the complimentary wine, beer and cocktails from Luxco and Anheuser-Busch. Deep house beats from DJ Shea Marie of FLY and DJ Anthony Hann spice up the evening, as will local burlesque stars, Gravity Plays Favorites until 12:30 a.m. Click here to buy tickets.
Multi-media: Bendover/Hangover: An Evening with Cinema Zero gives you enough art to last a lifetime. Well, at least a Saturday evening. Click here so Paul Friswold can fill you in with his best-written voice-over yet.
Sunday, 5/11
Special Effects: Get closer than ever to those make-you-want-your-mommy creatures of the big screen at MONSTERS! The Art & Technology of Animatronics. This Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4412) exhibit runs through September 1 and features the works of Academy Award-winner John Cox and his team in Queensland, Australia. These works include the croc from Peter Pan, gorillas from George or the Jungle 2 and the less frightening Selkie the sea lion from Nim’s Island and Inspector Gadget’s gadgets. Admission is $8 and $7 for children, and it's open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.
African Queen: Nothing makes a mama more proud than catching a glimpse of her offspring performing and celebrating the strength of motherhood. Children from across the area of Yele, the children's company of Afriky Lolo, join forces to perform Dji Djugu (Dangerous River), a powerful West African dance created to rejoice all maternal figures. This special two-hour Mother’s Day event at COCA (524 Trinity Avenue; 314-725-6555) beings at 1:30 p.m. and ends with always-listen-to-your-mother mantra. This is the type of lesson-learning fodder in which any parent can take delight. Call 314-725-1834 ext. 124 to get $10 tickets today.
