At 10 p.m., you’ll pay nothing to enter vanity’s ground zero, just as long as that see-and-be-seen attire is in check. Sweetest Escape: Slip into something absolutely angelical to make an appearance at Sugar Lounge’s (1405 Washington Avenue) grand opening. Those whiteout-colored wares will blend right in with the all-white décor and almost become a part of the new bar’s elegant ambiance. Urbane in the Membrane: The Rialot Ballroom at the Centene Center for Arts and Education (3547 Olive Street; 314-963-3477) will make an exquisite backdrop for Urbanaire, a fundraiser benefiting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) advocate group Promo. A special VIP reception will kick things off at 7:30 p.m. (VIP tickets $150), and doors for general admission ticket-holders ($50, $30 for students) open at 8:30. Upon entrance, appetizers from Revival, El Scorcho, Boogaloo and Fu ManChu will greet you, as will the complimentary wine, beer and cocktails from Luxco and Anheuser-Busch. Special Effects: Get closer than ever to those make-you-want-your-mommy creatures of the big screen at MONSTERS! The Art & Technology of Animatronics. This Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4412) exhibit runs through September 1 and features the works of Academy Award-winner John Cox and his team in Queensland, Australia. These works include the croc from Peter Pan, gorillas from George or the Jungle 2 and the less frightening Selkie the sea lion from Nim’s Island and Inspector Gadget’s gadgets. Admission is $8 and $7 for children, and it's open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.
African Queen: Nothing makes a mama more proud than catching a glimpse of her offspring performing and celebrating the strength of motherhood. Children from across the area of Yele, the children's company of Afriky Lolo, join forces to perform Dji Djugu (Dangerous River), a powerful West African dance created to rejoice all maternal figures. This special two-hour Mother’s Day event at COCA (524 Trinity Avenue; 314-725-6555) beings at 1:30 p.m. and ends with always-listen-to-your-mother mantra.
