In a report issued late last week, the Department of Justice's inspector general found that an attorney for the marshal service, David Band, arranged for the rides and other privileges for the Fox Sports broadcasters. Band moonlights as a statistician for Fox Sports.
The inquiry found that Band arranged for U.S. marshal deputies to drive Buck and Aikman to the 2008 Super Bowl in Phoenix and provide a motorcade for Buck and McCarver during the 2007 World Series in Boston. Buck and Aikman got another free ride courtesy of U.S. marshals last January when they were escorted to an NFL playoff game in Tampa Bay.
According to the DOJ inspector general, Band violated the standards of ethical conduct for federal employees and USMS policy governing the use of government vehicles. Federal prosecutors have so far declined to press criminal charges against Band.
U.S. marshals are supposed to guard judges, protect federal witnesses, transport prisoners and hunt fugitives. You know, like Tommy Lee Jones, in The Fugitive.
