Could this become the hot new coffee spot? @MayorSlay thinks so.

Update 3:18 p.m.: Now Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed tweets that he's in discussions with pizzeria Pi about making the Del Taco building into a "unique concept restaurant." Original post follows...

Ever wonder whether Kaldi's Coffee would be a good fit for the Saucer on South Grand? If so, you and Mayor Francis G. Slay have at least one thing in common.

On Saturday, @MayorSlay tweeted: "Kaldi's interested in the Del Taco building? #fgs."

Soon after, @Kaldis_Coffee responded: "@MayorSlay lots of potential for a local coffee shop don't you think? #STL."

Then @MayorSlay shot back: "Who knows as much about saucers? RT @Kaldis_Coffee: @MayorSlay lots of potential for a local coffee shop don't you think? #STL."

And then @Kaldis_Coffee on the return: "@MayorSlay I think our logo would fit perfect on top of the saucer. We will keep you posted #STL."

Woah!

Interesting developments, we must say, in The Saga of the Saucer on South Grand. @MayorSlay has been outspoken in his desire to save the Saucer, so his social network recruiting is no surprise (especially if you agree with Alderman Antonio French about the Mayor's tweeting habits).

But Kaldi's interest is a welcome development for the city's preservationists, since developer Rick Yackey's plan to demolish the building has been predicated on a lack of desire from retailers to reuse it. (We advise, however, that if the coffeehouse is really interested, it move quickly, before taggers turn the building into the new 5Pointz.)

If Kaldi's does end up taking the property, you can be sure they'll get plenty of love from thankful patrons. Plus a sweet tax abatement. #fgs
