When a woman arrived at the La Quinta Inn in Grand Junction, Colorado, she was hoping to sell her monkey.
But the "buyer" had different ideas.
The woman, who Grand Junction police have not yet named, met a man online who was interested in buying her black cap Capuchin monkey, the value of which is about $6,000, according to the primate store.
But when she met the man, he pepper-sprayed her in the face, grabbed the carrier containing the monkey, and ran away.
The woman did not suffer serious injuries.
The suspect is described as "a middle-eastern male, 35 to 40 years old, 5'5″ tall, thin build, with a short beard. He was wearing glasses, a blue shirt, and possibly a vest," according to the Grand Junction Police.
Black cap Capuchin monkeys are illegal to possess in Colorado.
The investigation is ongoing.
