We are delighted to announce that Christy Bertelson has decided to take on a new creative challenge: It will be a short walk for her but a different world as she moves down the hall to run the features department.
Christy has been Editorial Page editor for 10 years. Before becoming editorial page editor in 1997, she wrote a Metro column for four years, for which she won the Ernie Pyle award for human interest reporting from the Scripps Howard Foundation in 1996. She has covered the environment beat, was a g.a., a feature writer, an agriculture reporter and a health care writer.
From Christy: "It was an incredible challenge to be the editorial page editor starting in the last throes of the Clinton Adminstration, through 9/11, and during this great misadventure in Iraq. This has been the most difficult and rewarding job I've ever had as a journalist. I worked in a vegetable cannery once; that was a lot harder on my feet.
"What I'm proudest of is the team of remarkable talents and bright minds I've been able to work and play with every day in editorial -- people with a passion for social justice, dedication to their craft and enormous gifts as writers and reporters. I'll miss their energy and their sense of humor. But I can't wait to take on this new, creative challenge, use my left brain a little more, have some fun and help the newspaper find its way to new audiences in a landscape that's shifting every day."
For those of you who are not familar with Christy, she is a skilled editor (and writer), an energetic and creative thinker, and a sharp wit. As deputy managing editor/features, we think Christy is the editor and leader who can elevate our features sections, help build and create terrific entertainment coverage online and in print, and help develop niche products down the road.
Christy will remain in Editorial until we replace her, but she will begin meeting with folks in features and learning how things run there, effective immediately. Please join us in congratulating her and welcoming her to her new position!
