Steven Combs, the father of sixteen children, was shot and killed around 11:40 a.m. on Sunday while washing his girlfriend's car outside his house in Wellston. Now, the North County Police Cooperative is taking action to help the family he left behind.
The police cooperative has created a GoFundMe page with a goal of $5,000 to help Combs' family with funeral costs. Major Steve Runge told Fox 2 that he and other officers in the North County Police Cooperative felt for the family and all the children who lost their father, especially so close to the holidays.
"Of course we have sympathy and empathy for the family. I've never done this before but if there is ever a time to do it, now is the time," said Runge, who even donated $100 of his own money to start the campaign.
As of press time, the officers raised $2,800 of their $5,000 goal.
Fox 2 reports that Combs was shot five times by an unknown man in the 6200 block of Bartmer. The location is near Wellston's industrial district, which has a number of surveillance cameras police. The station reports that officers were reviewing those Monday in search of the suspect.
Combs' children range in age from infancy to 26 years old. He also had another child on the way, according to Fox 2.
KSDK says that loved ones described Combs as peaceful family man with a passion for his towing business. They don't know why someone would hurt him.
Captain Clay Farmer told KSDK that the North County Police Cooperative is "all in" to do anything to help the family.
"It's so important for the community and these families to know that we truly care about them, not just coming to work, punching a time clock, and going home,” Farmer said.
