Beckham allegedly broke into a home in the 5400 block of Bancroft just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. St. Louis police officer David Haynes was responding to a call about the burglary when he spotted Beckham's vehicle and gave chase.
While pursuing the suspect, Haynes police cruiser was struck by another vehicle -- setting off a four vehicle accident that claimed Haynes' life. Beckham was taken into custody about 12 hours later.
A St. Louis City Circuit Court Judge ordered Beckham, of the 3200 block of Arsenal, held with no bond.
Prior to joining the department he was a United States Marine. He spent his entire commissioned career assigned to the Second District as a patrolman. He leaves behind his wife, mother, brother and extended family and friends.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
