Sheldon Beckham, 23, was charged yesterday with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, stealing under $500 and resisting arrest.

Beckham allegedly broke into a home in the 5400 block of Bancroft just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. St. Louis police officer David Haynes was responding to a call about the burglary when he spotted Beckham's vehicle and gave chase.

While pursuing the suspect, Haynes police cruiser was struck by another vehicle -- setting off a four vehicle accident that claimed Haynes' life. Beckham was taken into custody about 12 hours later.

A St. Louis City Circuit Court Judge ordered Beckham, of the 3200 block of Arsenal, held with no bond.
