The downsizing over at the Post-Dispatch is about to eat its way into the physical shape of the newspaper. Beginning next Monday, the daily will trim the width of its pages to 11 inches -- down from its current corpulence at 12.5 inches.

In a note in yesterday's paper, editor Arnie Robbins and managing editor Pam Maples, inform readers that the narrower pages allow the Post-Dispatch to "conserve newsprint and reduce costs." The daily also plans to switch to a larger font next week that will offer subscribers an "easier-to-read experience."

The new Post-Dispatch will have the same number of pages as today's paper yet promises to offer as much news and information as ever. How they'll do that with a skinnier newspaper and larger print is beyond me. But, hey, it's all part of an exciting, new Post-Dispatch that includes a host of additional changes.

  • Bye bye, Metro section! Come next Monday the paper will eliminate its Metro section that currently features local stories and the newspaper's editorial pages. The Metro section will merge into a new "A Section" that includes local and national news as well as business stories and international coverage.
  • Adios, Saturday tabloid. The paper will keep the same look seven days a week, eliminating the tabloid-style Saturday edition.
  • Wednesday's "Eat, Drink, Live" supplement will change to "Let's Eat" a section focusing on cooking, drink and food.
  • Sunday's News Watch section will merge with the A Section.
  • And, finally, the paper's front-page banner will change to include the daily's Web site, stltoday.com.
So, when does the Post-Dispatch announce that it will cease printing the paper all together? I give them another two years. April 2011.
