An eight-year-old girl was sleeping early this morning when someone shot into her house, hitting her in the leg, St. Louis County police say.

The girl was in her bedroom when a bullet burst through the wall and hit her, according to police. Several family members were also home.

Officers with the department's North County Precinct were alerted to the shooting at 3:43 a.m. by a 911 call as well as a hit on the county's ShotSpotter system, which detects gunfire.

The unknown shooter or shooters fired numerous times into the house, which is in the 10400 block of Count Drive in the Castle Point neighborhood, not far from Halls Ferry Road and I-270. The girl was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police ask anyone with information to call them at 636-529-8210 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.
