Thirty-nine-year-old Rico Kemp is dead after allegedly breaking into a home in the 2800 block of Magnolia (below) in south St. Louis just after midnight this morning.

According to police, a 48-year-old man woke up around 12:30 a.m. to hear the sound of someone breaking into the rear door of his home. Fearing for his safety, the resident fired a shot, striking Kemp, of the 2300 block of Collett in north St. Louis County, in the chest.

An investigation is ongoing. More details -- like why a person from way up in north county would choose a home on this block of St. Louis to randomly rob -- when they become available.
