St. Louis Public School Superintendent
Kelvin Adams yesterday submitted a plan to cut 500 jobs, close six schools and save nearly $58 million in order to balance the district's $300 million budget.
As the
Post-Dispatch reports this morning, district employees bracing for bigger changes were pleased with Adams' precision cuts that will lead to some firings though most of the job cuts will come through retirements.
The school board still needs to approve Adams' suggestions. The superintendent plans to close the following schools: Alternative South at Lyon, Bunche International Studies Middle, Ford Branch, Fresh Start at Turner, Gallaudet, Pruit Middle. The following schools would be converted to charter schools: Ashland Elementary, Central VPA High School, Sumner High School, Walbridge Elementary.
