A St. Louis woman was killed on Interstate 64 Sunday morning after she was hit in a head-on collision with a driver who was going in the wrong direction.

The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. near Washington Park, according to KMOV. The St. Louis woman, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene. She had been driving west at the time of the crash.

The driver at fault, a 29-year-old man from O'Fallon, Illinois, was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Illinois State Police told KMOV that they suspect he was intoxicated at the time of the collision.

The highway was closed from Kingshighway to Saint Clair Avenue for nearly five hours, KMOV reports. Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. told the Belleville News Democrat that emergency responders were still working to retrieve the woman from the car as of 8 a.m. Sunday.

Dye also told the paper that Sunday's collision was the second accident in four days caused by someone driving the wrong way.

The Illinois State Police had no new information as of 3 p.m.
