Some good news for animal lovers: Not everybody in Columbia is into dog-shooting. Stephens College, the women's college across the street from Mizzou, will be opening a pet dorm next fall for students who cannot bear to leave their dogs, cats, birds or ferrets at home.
Stephens has had pet-friendly dorms before, but recently-renovated Searcy Hall, the new "pet central," will be the largest. It's expected to house about 60 students and their pets, reports the Columbia Daily Tribune, and will have an exercise yard and provide doggie day care, staffed by Columbia residents.
"We're establishing 'Pet Central' on campus because it allows us to create an all-new living and learning environment for our students who love animals," President Dianne Lynch said in an e-mail. "I expect that we'll have all kinds of new initiatives, which will make Stephens an even better college choice for students interested in careers in veterinary science and other animal-centered professions."
In anticipation of the opening of "Pet Central," the college has eliminated its 40-pound size limit on dogs, though certain breeds (perhaps pit bulls and corgis?) are still forbidden.
