Update: Congrats to readers Karen Cheney and Don Weber for winning our news challenge with a score of 47 out of 48. Answers to the 2013 quiz appear below in bold.
It can be the unluckiest of numbers. Just ask former anchorman Larry Conners and that other Larry, Saint Louis University's Lawrence Biondi — two local icons who found themselves engulfed in controversy and, later, out of work in 2013. The year also brought misfortune to the hometown team. Sure the Cardinals made it to the World Series, but only to lose (again) to the superior Boston Red Sox. Adding to the injury, Cardinal Nation lost its greatest player of all time, Stan Musial, who departed to baseball's Elysian Fields.
Speaking of nirvana, though, thank heaven for our local politicians. Their bumbling and grandstanding at least provided the year with a bit of levity. And let's not forget the stupid criminals. They're always good for a laugh, especially this year when a local judge joined the ranks of the felon nitwits. If we're in further need of feeling good about ourselves, 2013 also found St. Louis atop some prestigious national rankings, like having some of the least choosiest online daters. You'd think it would be hard not to be lucky with such a reputation.
But, hey, enough of the preamble. It's time for this year's news quizzin' to commence. So go ahead and answer the following questions to the best of your ability, and submit your results to us by January 3, 2014. And be sure to include a way to contact you in the unlikely event that you win. Oh, and good luck!
