Police spokeswoman Erica Van Ross reports in a statement to the media that this morning's bloodbath downtown brings the 2009 homicide count in the city up to 38.

The good news is, that's ten fewer stiffs than last year by this time.

"Of the 38 homicides we've had this year," Van Ross adds, "nearly 90% have had victims that led high risk lifestyles. (By high risk, we mean involved in drugs and/or involved in gangs, and/or unemployed.)"

Minutes after sending out that statement, Van Ross sent out this somewhat amusing follow-up:

"To clarify, we're not talking unemployed as in those who have been laid off or are attempting to find work.  We mean those who get their money through illegal activities, (be it drugs, career thieves, etc.), who are often not looking for legal, legitimate employment.
