This Land Was Made for You and Me...But Not for Gay Marriage Haters

Peter, Paul and Mary...and no gay marriage foes
Gay marriage foes the National Organization for Marriage, who made a stop in St. Louis in early August, got a friendly little note from Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey, the surviving members of the 60's folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

In the note, addressed to NOM executive director Brian Brown, Yarrow and Stookey ask that the group stop playing the Peter Paul and Mary version of the Woodie Guthrie anthem "This Land is Your Land" at rallies that galvanize sentiment against gay marriage.

"We respect your right to hold and advocate for any position you wish," reads the letter, "but the philosophy of the 'National Organization for Marriage' is directly contrary to the advocacy position Peter, Paul & Mary have held for decades."

The letter is posted in its entirety at the Courage Campaign website, a California marriage-equity network. Yarrow and Stookey end the missive with a respectful request for NOM to find a new theme song -- and a promise to seek legal recourse if need be.

NOM executive director Brown did not immediately return a message seeking comment, but the Daily RFT will be more than happy to report his comments if he calls us back.
