What's The Matter With Meat, Foer?

Sep 28, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer is coming to Washington University this Thursday evening to chat with students and anyone else who cares about his personal journey from occasional meat-eater to dedicated vegetarian.

That journey took him through the unholy abattoirs of the modern factory farming system, where chickens live wing to wing, shitting on each other and pecking themselves to death in tiny miserable cages; turkeys are bred to be so disfigured they can't even mate; and a whole ocean's worth of dead fish are thrown back in the waters to rot, just to net a pound of shrimp.

The book makes a pretty damn clear case that modern factory farming isn't just unsustainable, it's immoral.

Foer took some time to chat with Gut Check in advance of his appearance. Go read the interview -- unless you're having a dead animal for lunch.
